Tsunami Alert

"A "widely destructive tsunami" could be unleashed by the huge earthquake that has struck off the coast of Indonesia, authorities said today.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake, measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale, struck at 1609 GMT off the coast of Sumatra and was an aftershock of the December 26 quake." (Times Online)

USGS spokesman Doug Blake said there had been no reports of tsunami activity nearly 90 minutes after the quake struck.
"At this point in time we don't know what type of fault occurred ... and that is critical information we just don't have yet," he said. "It is in the aftershock zone of the December 26 quake. It's a little bit south, but it's on the same fault."

Earthquake experts on Japanese TV say that the possibility of a tsunami depends on how deep undersea the quake is.

i would trust the japanese on this thought. i think they know wtf they are talking about when it comes to quakes.
