"Aviation history was made this morning when the first A380, the world�??s largest commercial aircraft, successfully took off on its maiden flight, leaving Blagnac International Airport in Toulouse, France at 10.29 hours local time (08.29 UTC) from runway 32L. Boeing's back on track: (Reuters).
Like Claude said the future is in frequency. The 787 will handle the short routes and the 777 will handle the long routes. Both with speed and efficency.
A seat only makes you money when its full: More routes means scalable capacity and higher fuel prices means a premium on effiency.

i see airbus failing in this persuit. it is hard to capture a market with big planes. especially since the need for them is decrease i thinkn because ofo the amount of cities increasing. a lot of business people do not want to connect. ofcourse only time will tell. its a 5 billion dollar gamble

Airbus' strategy looks wise if you assume that they can materialise economies of scale and that many of the large airports have a shortage of landing slots already today, while air traffic is still increasing.
And I am not sure if the A380 aims at the business travellers market. I think it's more designed as a product for the market of leisure travellers who are price- but not time-sensitive and don't mind having to take connections. And, after all, would it be so unimaginable that the A380 becomes the first choice for a lowcost-intercontinental airline? Tokyo-Sydney, NewYork-London or Johannesburg-Frankfurt for 200 US$ flat ... quite attractive for Nomads, even if you have to share a plane with 500 other people, isn't it?

"I've been in this business for 28 years. I've watched the industry press as various designs and concepts go from 'early hype' to either 'abandoned' or 'flying' stages. It's pretty obvious that Boeing bent to political pressure, and the next batch from them will still have final assembly in the usa, but the components will be coming from all over, specfically a lot of the hardware from china, and the software from india. To anybody that's been watching the industry for a lot of years, it's pretty obvious, the groundwork has been laid. The next batch of Boeing products after the dreamliner, are going to have final assembly done in China."
