Glasnost a la China
The Chinese government has finally lifted its blockage on bbc.co.uk. I'm not sure if the World Service is available yet on Radio and Television, but if it is, this marks a dramatic reversal in China's attitudes towards "Auntie" ever since John Simpson reported from the by-lanes surrounding Tiananmen Square on the night of June 4, 1989.
The Middle Kingdom, recently lifted its ban on blogspot web logs. Sadly, wikipedia.org, Human Rights Watch and others remain shut out.
Harvard Law School is conducting an ongoing study on the practise of filtering out websites and denying access around the world. China (obviously) attracts the bulk of its attention. 44,000, trained, english speaking, web-watchers continue to monitor the Chinese internet activity, while actively denying access to websites that contain key words that the Chinese government has refused to disclose.

Let me add the UAE to that "censorship list"...
I am feeling specially frustrated right now.. Just realized that they recently blocked flickr.com and that I need to find another way to post my pics.
Damn.

Actually, Pierre, the BBC is accessable in most higher end hotels in big, urban Chinese cities or to anyone with an appropriate satellite. Great to hear the website isn't banned anymore though!

Sheila, that's excellent news! I'm glad to hear that your average Chinese spends large amounts of time in higher end hotels in bigger Chinese cities... and can afford satellites.
Point is that it's available to expats, not the mainstream.
You forgot to mention that BBC is also available on your yacht.
POS!

I thought it was common knowledge already that BBC is available on my yacht!
