Best & worst places in the world

I was reading forums from other websites & came across pretty funny threads asking traveler's their favorite & least favorite places in the world. So, I thought it'd be interesting to put it out on Nomadlife & ask everyone here to share where is the best and worst places you've been to in the world (because let's be honest - even if everyone's very well rounded and open minded, you'll still prefer one place over another).

Since I'm the one who raised the topic, here's my two pence's worth:

Best:
Tabo & Spiti Lahaul Valley - India
Lhasa - Tibet/China (really, almost anywhere around the greater Himalaya area & old Tibetan kingdom)
New York - USA
Rio de Janeiro - Brazil
Istanbul - Turkey
Luang Prabang - Laos
Angkor Wat Complex - Cambodia (especially Bayon & Ta Phrom)

Worst:
Lhatse - Tibet/China. The situation was "dire"
Chengdu - China
Most places in Michigan - USA
The part of Kentucky that boarders Cincinnati - USA

Disclaimer: This topic isn't brought up to offend anyone. Everything written will represent personal, biased opinions. Just trying to have something fun to read! :)

What's up with the no Kansas love? C'mon, you just have to be open minded...and it doesn't hurt to be the type of person who is impressed with wide prarie expanses, truck stops, and wheat. Lots of wheat.

Anyway, I'm mortified that I forgot to mention Branson, Missouri, USA. This is the worst place on the planet.

What's with so many of the yanks listing in the format of (city, country) for places outside the USA and (city, state-name-or-abbreviation) for places inside the USA?

The USA ain't anymore important than the rest of us. And I'm sure that many many people from other countries don't know the names or abbreviations of all the US states. Come to think of it, I reckon that many many people from the USA probably don't know them all either.

My thoughts:
Great places:
The king's burial chamber inside the Great Pyramid, Egypt.
The coffee-belt zone, Colombia
Middle of nowhere in Australia under a clear night sky.
San Francisco, USA

Not so great places:
Los Angeles, USA

yeah, but we're bigger, much more so. So it's more descriptive that way. To the extent that it's like saying Tallin, Estonia instead of Tallin, EU. It's better, even though there's a lot of people who don't know what Estonia is.

Pigs arse you're bigger. China's bigger, and people aren't listing "Shanghai, relevant-chinese-province-name". They're listing Shanghai, China. And they're listing Montreal, Canada (also bigger), not Montreal, Quebec (or even worse, some two letter abbreviation for Quebec).

And for a global list, it's more descriptive with the country. You tell me what's better for someone who's not from my country:
Katherine, NT, or Katherine, Australia.

If I took your attitude, and listed Katherine, NT, then some European who isn't aware that the USA doesn't actually have a state abbreviated NT might assume that they do, and assume that I'm talking about some place in the USA.

So the system obviously doesn't work if more than one country wants to drop it's country name, meaning at most only one country can do it, and it's just bloody arrogant for yanks to think it should be them.

If you need to differentiate between Springfield Illinois and any of your other 47+ Springfields, then at least list Springfield, Illinois, USA. That is much more descriptive, and much less arrogant to the rest of the world.

Whew, boy does that feel better. Releasing a lot of built up tension here....

Glad you've got the tension out.
When China starts a terrible sitcom about a sassy kids in a province of Gansu and the rest of the world imports it, then it'll be reasonable to refer to it only by that name.
It would be better obviously to mention that states are in the USA, and granted, I realize from living in Europe that we do need to be more careful, as many people in the rest of the world translate many innocent actions by Americans to arrogance or stupidity.

Dan, your just mad because no one has said Canberra yet.

Well...I wouldn't hold me breath.

Blogger Dan said...

Well I would have said Canberra myself, but I thought it might tarnish my credibility, so I left it out.

As for why I'm mad, this is seriously years of ill-sentiment about americans expressing this attitude (accidentally or on purpose) that I've been let build up inside of me instead of expressing it at the time, and today it just felt like coming out.
