A monumental task
Today, March 5, 2006, our own co-founder of Nomadlife - Devrim - has declared that he will attempt the mammoth task of learning Mandarin, Chinese. His goal is that in one year, his Chinese will be at an "impressive" level.
Good luck, Digs!! I'll be looking forward to hear you hold a conversation in Chinese with a native! :-)

I just started like 2 weeks ago.
I'm meeting with Chris Lonsdale, the guy who wrote The Third Ear, this Friday...the book's pretty great so far and has kept me focused on picking up more and more Mandarin while I'm here. You should check it out if you haven't already.

Last time he said the exact same thing was half a year ago, Sept. 2005.
Sheila, what did he do to you to make you believe and have hope in him?

Good luck man, Mandarin is bloody hard... as I'm sure you know.

Jenny, let's just say that it has something to do with a personal bet. ;-)

The full story is that in the heat of the moment I challenged someone I shouldn't have to a personal bet. Everything inside of me screamed "red flag"... but then it's not about being unable to win, more about not backing down from a challenge.
Willpower and determination, please do not fail me. Dios Turu willing I'm going to take that SOB down.

I think learning a really difficult language in one year should become some sort of modern day renaissance man activity. Much honour and justice to you Digs.
