The National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme ? is finally launched across the country.
Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh launched the country?s landmark National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in the remote village of Bandlapalli in Andhra Pradesh?s Anantpur district, one of the country?s most backward districts, on February 2, 2006. NREGS job cards were handed out to five villagers, signifying the inauguration of the scheme whose goal is eradicating rural poverty and migration by enhancing the livelihood security of India?s rural poor.
The scheme, one of the country?s most ambitious anti-poverty programmes ever, envisages a legal guarantee of a minimum of 100 days? work in a year to one person in each of the India?s 60 million rurals household. It also aims to create durable assets and strengthen the livelihood base of the rural poor. More
