my mentor: had one for a while, just asked her, an external doing cultural sensitivity trainings for @ in Switzerland, was extremely useful during my traineeship! my mentee: had my first mentoring talk with her yesterday, she's soon leaving for a traineeship herself :) sarita
I've had at least 3 (that I can remember off the top of my head). It starts as just asking them for advice & showing genuine interest in learning from their expertise. The relationship was built & grown through
1) Taking the responsibility for re-connecting with them on a regular basis even if it is an e-mail or e-mail they don't return.
2) Expanding the relationship to talk about all aspects of your life and their life. Not being able to share your personal details and caring enough to ask about their families and their challenges/concerns for their life.
I find the older I get and the more unique I become that it doesn't make sense to have one "mentor" so I have a wide network of people that I build similar relationships with. Also, it's important to note that as you get older, sometimes these people will be your peers and in some areas of your life even younger than you!
I have reached out to a number of mentees over the years, but most people are not savvy enough to maintain those relationships.
i carry around a spreadsheet with me to identify potential mentors and protegés. each time i meet someone i write down their name and contact info, then write a memo to debrief myself on my first impression. This memo helps me to then sit down and write a feasibility study as to whether the person would best fit the role of friend, enemy, lover, stranger, collaborator, mentor, protegé, or criminal mastermind that drags me into its enterprise. i then submit the report to myself with my recommendations and await feedback. usually the report's recommendations are respected, because i'm a hands-off manager

I had a mentee before but he turned bad so I had to cut and throw him into molten Lava. He survived, got angry and almost conquered the world.
He sold a lot of merchandise though.

Dody,
I believe the questioned asked if you were ever a mentor, not if you were mental. ;-)
