Worst refereeing decisions of the World Cup so far..
120+ goals have been scored in the tournament so far, no thanks to some really, really bad refereeing. Where is Pierluigi Colina when you need him most?! :(
My vote goes to the decision that gave Italy the penalty kick that put Australia out in the final minute of the game.

it was penalty...
ps: i am not italian..
5:18 PM
It was BULLSHIT. Anyone who saw it in slow motion saw that it was bullshit.
5:36 PM
bll - was not a penalty but rather a free kick
If Australians weren't such good sports, that referee would be shot...
5:43 PM
Part of the game....anyone would have done that to try for the penalty...
wouldnt you have wanted to try and win???? I would have done the same, anyone would have done the same.....
its being smart.... at the right time...
5:49 PM
Australia was definitly better in that match and would have deserved to win.
What happened in the end wasn't nice, and the Italian (sorry forgot his name) knew how to make use of a small fault. but that penalty was according to the rules of the game...
That's life!
And after all it's just a game and Australia still has rugby. :-)
Now let's see who the Italians are playing to on Friday: Ukraine or Switzerland!
5:51 PM
PS: Since the topic is actually referees: I'd kick the referee from the netherlands-portugal game out.
5:59 PM
"Australia still has rugby" - WTFM?!?! I think you'll find the majority of Australians support Australian Rules Football (AFL) - a game which usually doesn't afford the winning team a victory in the last 5 seconds of a match due to a referee's decision.
Soccer...silly game.
6:05 PM
It was definetly not a penalty !
lucky bastards.
Its just like what happened in the game between Tunisia & Ukraine : i feel robbed !!! this idiot from paraguay, didnt give us a CLEAR One, and just couple of seconds later, he offer chevchenko an imaginary penalty !!!
the russian refree in the Portugal vs Nedherlands game......NO COMMENTS..
6:09 PM
lots of unacceptable referee performance in this world cup. like the portuguese kicking the dutch dude in the chest yesterday which was not a penalty according to the referee, like lots of yellow and red cards given and not given etc etc. and apparently there has been serious screening of the referees and their assistants...
6:48 PM
1. If soccer is a silly game, why do you even care about the referee's decision
2. Football (aka soccer) IS "a game which usually doesn't afford the winning team a victory in the last 5 seconds of a match due to a referee's decision".
7:08 PM
Totally not a penalty. It would have been awesome to have seen Australia go through, but they had a whole half playing against 10 men to win it. Shitty way to go out, though.
I heard there were 16 yellow and 4 red cards in the Portugal-Holland match yesterday. Seriously, wtf?
8:30 PM
I love that "hockey game" :) I was in a cafe and people were just laughing their ass off whenever someone got a card.
9:44 PM
Hi everyone, I am sorry but I have to desagree with many of you?
I am Italian and I don't care if you think my opinion is biased... (actually I am also Swiss, so it's my NEUTRAL part who is speaking right now, of course).
First a few answers:
1. If Australia played so well... well, they would have scored, and they didn't. Football is about scoring?
2. Football (Soccer) is a game where you lose in the last five minutes... wasn't Australia the team that scored two goals in the last 5 minutes?
3. You are proving that not only Italians blame the referee when they loose (hehe)
4. Italians lost the last cup against the same trainer...because of referee problems...so "ride bene chi ride ultimo" (el que rie ultimo rie mejor... I do not have a good translation in mind in English...can someone help?)
5. If there was a red card in the first part of the second half (which in my view was maybe just a yellow card), then there was a penalty at the end of the game (at least it was a consistent referee).
6. It's not very smart to make a fault in the penalty area in the last seconds of a match and in front of the referee.
A part from that. I liked the match, which, specially after the Portugal match... was a more "fair play" one. However, Italy did not play as good as we expected, we want more!
I am happy for Italy and sad for Switzerland sniff sniff! I hope Australians, with so many italian names as Bresciano, will now support us now :)
Oh? and about the referees? I don?t really know their rules this years to put yellow and red cards? each one has a different way of applying it? just look at the Swiss game!
11:00 PM
By the way... it's just football and I would appreciate if we could keep insults out of this... It's a game, there is a winner and a loser. So I don't think someone should call the others "bastards" (isn't aiesec about cultural understanding?)
11:03 PM
Personally, I wanted Italy to go through myself - if nothing else, it would ensure that the higher seeded teams made the final rounds. Someone made a point about Australia not being able to score - I really think the finger pointing should go Italy's way who looked far less exciting than the Aussies in that match.
Having said that, I also feel that this Italian team should take up synchronized diving or floor gymnastics as a second career - they're evidently very good at it on the soccer pitch.
About the refereeing, which is the point brought up in the first place, I think every one of them should be sacked... The England opener against Paraguay was another game where the referee just seemed to love his whistle.
12:47 AM
Oh and about someone trying for the penalty...
Here's what a REAL referee thinks about diving...
'In a sense opponents are colleagues. Players are not only people who play, they are workers, people doing a job playing. That means people doing the same job are colleagues, and I think gaining an advantage in a very unfair way such as diving can create a big problem for an opponent. The result of a relegation match, for instance, could end a player's career. So I think a player should be careful, really careful, before diving.' - Pierluigi Collina
12:52 AM
Funny what difference a ref makes, isn't it? I think there was only one single yellow card last night at the Switzerland-Ukraine match.
Soooo sad we didn't score! Aaahhhh, and I HATE Penalty shootouts :-( Oh well, we've made our goal to reach the "eighth finals" (is that the correct was to say it?) Chiara: I shall be for Italy now I guess....But Forza Svizzera forever! LOL :-)
5:24 AM
Football is too beautiful of a game to be spoiled by cultural understanding :)
6:38 AM
Where is Pierluigi Colina when you need him most?!
He is a comentator for the Mexican TV during this World Cup
8:10 AM
Again, Ukraine did it, and the swiss are out !!Can't believe it !!
Chiara, how many times have you been to a football stadium (for big challenge games)?? U should know that you can't control your Adrenaline after that ! or at least I dont :))
But, when i said Bastards, it's just to complete the adj : Lucky :))))
So, dont take it personal, i also use to be a supporter of the "azzuri", but so many things happened, and changed my preferences !
Forza Italia anyway (cause they'll play Ukraine) :)))
8:52 AM
And what did he say about the penalty?
I also think that Australia deserves to win. They played really well, considering that they were playing against Italy.
Ah, I hope to see Australia to become better, louder, and prouder in World Cup 2010.
8:54 AM
"Football is too beautiful of a game to be spoiled by cultural understanding"
well said Dody! :-)
10:04 AM
Soccer is also another excuse to drink beer. But then again who needs an excuse to drink beer?
Beer rocks!
10:12 AM
It is funny how you stick for Pierluigi Collina... this is the most hated referee ever in Czech republic :o)). I think there was a recommendatin for him, not to come to Czech for vacations :o))).
but I agree, only too many matches have been decided by referees which is totally wrong... eg. I disliked the way Croatia lost to Australia...
10:39 AM
Hi Emir, Carissa and all the others,
To answer to your question, I have been to a stadium at least 10 times, always in the supporters curve. Among the matches I have seen: Argentina-UK last November, Brazil-Argentina '99, Italy-Switzerland a couple of times and Italy-Cote d'Ivoire last November. So I know what you are saying about adrenaline. But to shout something in the stadium and write something in a blog it's something different. I don't take it too personal but I don't like it.
For Siz, to win the World Cup...and be among the 8 better teams in the world you have to play well.. not "considering they were playing against Italy". With that statement you are just saying Italians were better. But of course, when your team is not there you support the ?weak?-team...is kind of natural (see Euro 2002 with Greece, everyone was supporting them).
Thanks Carissa for supporting Italy! :) I would have liked to see Switzerland playing against Italy this week. Also because I think they have improved a lot in this last month!
Please? If someone was watching Pierluigi Collina's comment on Mexican TV... what did he say??? I would like to know!
Last but not least: it's hard to be a soccer fan in a city where no-one cares about soccer :'(
And we were lucky, but it was a penalty :)
1:09 PM
"But to shout something in the stadium and write something in a blog it's something different. I don't take it too personal but I don't like it."
On the other hand Chiara, this is also football. Where else can we speak in hyperboles but in this grandest tournament of all?
I wrote to Jen yesterday after the match that Australia should declare war against Italy just because of the penalty.
1:21 PM
Well... in that case... they would lose even the war ;)(just jocking...nothing funny about a war)
Well... I love football and I understand some "emotional" reactions. However, you should be aware of the consequences.
In 1990, Argentia-Italy in Naples, Italians whistle the Argentian anthem...just because it was a stadium and it was football, they did not want to "insult" Argentina, but they did. If you ask any Argentinean, today, 16 years later, they will tell you they still hate Italians because of that...
So, in my view, football does not justify any type of reaction. A private email is something, a post on a public blog..well...you were looking for reactions
By the way... they should declare war to their own player who caused the penalty. Blocking in a penalty area... right in front of the referee...brings a penalty kick. If something like that would have happened to Italy, the first one to feel ashamed would be the player who caused the penalty. (the second one would be the referee...and then the FIFA...and maybe even God) :)
1:54 PM
I want free-flowing football. I want to see goals from normal play and not from free-kicks or worse - penalties. I want to see mid-fielders who dont have to 'dive' to try and buy time for more players to get forward. I want defenders to make tackles without being afraid of 'diving' attackers getting them a card.
I don't want an incompetent referee deciding matches when the teams have fought so hard. This world cup is a joke - 24 red cards and we haven't even started the quarter-finals yet!
Joga Bonito - I want my joga bonito!
2:55 PM
Arent red and yellow cards up to the players?
The matches used to be way different years ago... now players use so many other means to get to the ball, which causes injuries and to be honest, not really pleasant football to watch.
And all this is ridiculous as the body is the main and most important thing the player has, and they still treat each other so badly...
Why should there be FIFA rules of how not to play? The players should realize it is in their power and for their own good to make the game fair and free of danger attacks on one another. And thus there will be fair results and real competition to see the best football skills.
