Distinctive smells
Some smells trigger distinct memories in me. I was walking around my university on Friday and as I walked past a group of Indonesian guys I was instantly taken back to the streets of Bandung and Jogja by the pervasive smell of their cigarettes - Kretek (clove cigarettes). It seemed to me that just about everyone in Indonesia smokes Kreteks, and the cigarettes have a very strong and distinct smell. The smell set off memories about my travels in the country and my Indonesian friends there.
What other smells are distinct to certain places or cultures and what memories or thoughts do they trigger within you?
