10 years of US welfare reform
I know this topic is a bit wonkish, but this month marks the 10th year of US Welfare Reform Act. So far it is considered as a success.
The act for example limit welfare payments to five years, consecutive or nonconsecutive, etc. When it was launched, dire predictions abound.
The issue of welfare and pension systems are always sticking points in developed countries (developing countries rarely have them) due to the high wire act required to maintain and balance the needs for the state to take care its own people and the burden of such systems to a country's economy.
What is your view on welfare/state pension system? Does your country have one?

I don't necessarily see that a social security system is a burden to a country's economy. Quite the contrary, in fact.
However, of course, too much of a good thing can have negative effects.

I don't entirely agree that welfare was a success in the US. It has certainly helped many families get back on their feet. However, welfare is very much abused by some of the people that receive the money. Instead of using it as a temporary solution to help them get started again, it is viewed as permanent income that people become dependent on. I don't think welfare should be used in this way. Of course, I don't know anyone on welfare....perhaps my view would be different if did.

My friend just made it on our welfare system due to a boyfriend that only qualifies to be regarded as a 'crap bag'. Great use for the welfare system if you had to ask me, but our welfare system is definately abused and not really well planned.
We did some searching and found an American NGO that provides full insurance coverage for pregnant women and children up to the age of two years. Best Twenty Bucks that I've EVER spent on a friend.
Only twenty bucks a month... can you believe that?
