Vegemite
What the hell is going on with the US! First that repealing of Habeas Corpus mumbo jumbo (sarcasm intended)... now, they're banning Vegemite! This is an outrage!

The US has banned importation of icky Australian delicacy Vegemite (a brown gunky spread that is simultaneously delicious and grody), enraging Aussie expats in the US, who require a steady supply of Vegemite in order to remain functional.
The bizarre crackdown was prompted because Vegemite contains folate, which in the US can be added only to breads and cereals.Expatriates say that enforcement of the ban has been stepped up recently and is ruining lifelong traditions of having Vegemite on toast for breakfast.
Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, Canada, said he was stunned when searched while crossing the US border recently.
"The border guard asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.

Agreed. I am officially boycotting the United States as a travel destination and throwing my support behind China as an economic power. Goooooo China! Also, i resent the use of the word 'icky'.
7:52 AM
Inasmuch as I dislike Vegemite, THAT is just bizarre and WRONG!
8:59 AM
I "understand" banning official import of vegemite but why cant you bring Vegemite over the borders for your own use... ? That makes no sense...
... have i missed some secret war between US and Aussie?? :o)
What about Marmite? Does not it taste as horribly same? And is that still allowed?
9:34 AM
I have a feeling that this is probably just an amplified urban myth. Maybe its being confiscated from hand luggage because it is a "gel"?
On the other hand, if this is true I absolutely support Tim Blair's call for eternal aussie armed jihad against the American scum....
10:15 AM
vegimite rhymes with dynamite. I rest my case.

Imagine the economic opportunity from bootlegging the stuff to the thousands of vegemite-crazed aussies living in the U.S. right now... :)
Hey Aussies, on the bright side - atleast you can buy their water reserves like you just did from the UK.... :)
11:43 AM
Foie Gras was recently banned in Chicago for being cruel to ducks.
Absurd as that may be, at least banning vegemite is banning something that is cruel to humans!
its disgusting!
1:48 PM
Banning Vegemite? That's ridiculous! Vegemite IS awesome !!!
1:56 PM
My Mum just bought me one gigantic jar last week. Vegemite is part of any good Aussie diet. Right up there with beer and Tim Tams. This is a sad, sad day.
2:35 PM
"We're happy little vegemites
as bright as bright can be,
we all enjoy our Vegemite
for breakfast, lunch, and tea,
our mummies say we're growing stronger every single week
because we love our Vegemite,
we all adore our Vegemite
it puts a rose in every cheeeek"
long live vegemite!
2:44 PM
That's funny.
I was in Washington two weeks ago and I was watching a TV Show called "bring the cook home". Actually he's from NZ and he is very famous in UK as well. On that show he bought a Vegemite from a deli shop and explained to everyone what was that for Australians...
2:55 PM
Finally I'm safe from Peter's mean Vegemite attacks. Ugh, if this is the first thing your Australian friends serve you in the morning, that's just cruel! ;-)
2:58 PM
Wow!!!!!
This is great news, it was just a matter of time before someone got killed.
Blechccch (no offense) Yeeccch (still no offense)
3:24 PM
I'm going to bring this up with my American students tomorrow!

It's an outrage that vegemite is banned. Please consider signing my petition at www.savevegemite.com and help get our favourite Aussie icon unbanned.
WE ARE NOT HAPPY LITTLE VEGEMITES!!!!
8:15 PM
I hate vegemite, but I hate bans that make no sense even more.
But I love the Aussies and everything they stand for - and that includes Vegemite :)
So on behalf of every non-Aussie who loves the Aussie culture and everytthing that they bring to the table (pun so totally intended), I would like to see this stupid ban being retracted.
9:45 PM
Is this story completely true? I mean there is no such information about it on US Food & Drug Administration site, all I could see it that they have banned it to be exported from the UK because of some "paper work" issues ...
If it is true, let's boycott Mc'Donalds...;-)
4:32 AM
well, I have three jars at home for 'initiation' purposes, it's so... enriching a diet supplement.. Am willing to smuggle to the US.
