Pakistan makes a deal with the Taliban
Pakistan is going to help the Taliban recapture Afghanistan; despite American attempts to force Pakistan to be harder on the Taliban, according to reports
The article doesn't quote sources other than saying "taliban and al qaeda contacts".
Besides, I don't yet buy that Pakistan would enter into a deal of this significance with billions of dollars of aid money from the US at stake. Not to mention that the US may not look too kindly on the deal.
I've consistently believed that given a choice between opportunity for economic growth vs jingoistic posturing & causing neighbourly conflict, a nation state will almost always choose the former. However I have also been accused of strong bouts of naivete many times :)
I don't buy the deal either - any benefits Pakistan would get from choosing to side with the Taliban; would be completely shot by alienating itself from the US. Which this government wouldn't do in a million years.
