Funny this topic should be mentioned, I posted on my blog a few weeks ago about matriarchal societies; in anthropological terms there are only four in existance.
If you ever get the chance, check out Margaret Mead's 'A Blackberry Winter' - her autobiography. It gives some interesting perspectives on the place of females in society (especially since anthropology, especially in her time, was male dominated).
Plus its way more readable than the hard research...
In a truest sense there are very few societies that can be considered purely matriachal or purely patriachal. What's happened now is that in modern society you are starting to get a bit of both with patriachy dominating in the majority of societies.
In an anthropological or imperical sense I think there are only 4 matriachal societies.
