hey,
this information isn't completely right.
Originally the Pyramids of Giza had to compete against the others in the election, but after criticism in Egypt, they were removed from the election list and made an honorary candidate.
That's because the Great Pyramid of Giza is the only monument remaining of the original seven wonders of the ancient Greeks.
So, now instead of 7 wonders, we have 7+1 wonders. Much better, hum? :P

by the way,
i'm ashamed to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer there.
There were many candidates better than the statue.
Here in Brazil there was many people against its election, even more now that the family of the sculptor (dead 40 years ago) wants to charge anyone for the use of the statue's image (you can take pictures for personal purposes, but you can't use it commercially).
It's so senseless... It would be the same than charging for using the images of Eiffel Tower or the Liberty Statue...
This is one hot issue in Brazil these days (especially considering the election as a new world's wonder), considering the statue was made by request of the Catholic Church in Rio de Janeiro and it's a public momument.

Huh... I was wondering why I woke up this morning and thought to myself "Man, the Pyramids aren't all that!" Isn't "Honorary Wonder" just an empty way of trying to make people forget about the "old" wonders? Pope John Paul II was an honorary Harlem Globetrotter but that doesn't mean he could throw down sweet dunks.
I'd say that the Pyramids should have been included automatically, leaving 6 open slots... but that would imply that I give a monkeys. I'll stick with my Hanging Gardens of Babylon, thankyouverymuch.

is there anything particularly wondrous about the statue of Christ the Redeemer?
Its pretty and iconic, but i never thought of it being wonder level special....

Do we really need an "official" list of wonders to appreciate architecture and history? The Taj would still be the Taj regardless of what list it was or was not on and the feeling one gets standing in front of it for the first time would still be the same. I'm sure thats true of many places around the world.

i think there would have been riots on the streets of Amman if Petra hadn't been chosen as one of the new Seven Wonders. I can't tell you how many sms', emails and solicitations from booths near tourist places I received telling me to vote for Petra.
Interestingly enough, most of the radio shows asking people to vote for Petra didn't say a damn thing about the history of the magnificent city carved into stone, but instead demanded listeners display their patriotic spirit by voting for Petra.

I thought this would be one for sure. Click here
