Mr. Musharraf if your reasoning for Emergency was to take care of extremism, then how do you explain the events of today?
I hope it doesnt get more messy out there.

Emad, correct me if I'm wrong.
There's a strong feeling among folks I've been speaking to that Musharraf is the only person capable of getting Pakistan out of this period (taking a long view). Benazir would be great for restoring democracy, but she would never have the support of the military (who hung her father).
My personal feeling is that if Musharraf goes, there is no Plan B.
The US employ a 'protect the quarterback' tactic in Afghanistan. Musharraf is their quarterback in Pakistan. I don't think that any of the political parties have a credible, battle-tested second line of leadership.

Pierre, It's difficult to say to be honest. It's something I've been thinking about a lot.
Opinion remains divided in the country now on whether:
1. Musharraf is the one responsible for us being at this point VS it would have been worse had it not been for the stability of his presence post 9/11
2. Musharraf going away will quiet the fundos that are threatened by him and we'll reach normality VS there's no plan B - he goes we're screwed.
At this point the internal dynamics as well as the realpolitik is painting the most abstract picture ever. But I'll keep bouncing off thoughts with you as things gain more clarity.
