these things are way too complicated and expensive. french laundry is good but not worth the wait and the amount you spend on it.

The AIESEC US team all went to lunch at Jean Georges a few years ago. Unbelievably, the restaurant offers (offered?) a two-course lunch in their more casual room for around $20. It's probably one of the best deals in NYC, if they still do it.
I have been to a full-price tasting menu dinner at Jean Georges to celebrate two close friends getting engaged. It cost more than a flight to France (each!) but, if you think of food as a chef's expression...as art, it was TOTALLY worth it. Though it was several years ago, I still remember the taste of most dishes, the thoughtful service and exactly what the room looked like.
However, one can't ignore thinking about how that money could be better spent in the world...so it's probably better thought of as a not-often-in-life indulgence, like visiting the Louvre or expensive concert tickets.

Jim, you are a better man than I.
I think I would remember every details of the dinner as well had I spent 500-700 dollars for a meal; but more for the traumatic experience akin to getting robbed at gun point :)

never eaten at any of them but know people who have worked at many. I think it comes down to your priorities. I would spend a large amount of money on a fantastic meal whereas others might spend more money than I would on clothes or cars etc.
