My gaming heyday was the era of the super nintento. Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart etc.

We recently bought an Xbox 360 for the house, as much for the DVD player as the gaming.

I thought perhaps it was time for a second gaming renaissance. I'm living in the desert, short on things to do, why not?

This is when I realised why the Wii is so popular. Games on the Xbox, and I assume the PS3, are hideously complicated.

You have to spend like half an hour just in training to become qualified to play the game. The games take months to finish. Hardly any of them are made for quick, fun social play with a friend - you need to go online to do most of the multiplayer stuff.

My guess is that the Wii has captured a big share of the older gaming crowd - people who just want to casually throw hadukens and roll nasty tiger uppercuts and tear their friends' heads off, without going through hours of certification and learn 60-button long moves in the process...

Yeah, I agree. Wii is pretty much more a social animal than an XBOX 360.

I still prefer playing solitary games on XBOX 360 though. I got bored with Wii games.

Had an Xbox but never really got into. Just got a PS3 and I am addicted.

Agree Tom, the longer time to finish games can be a little frustrating but I guess it allows you to feel you are getting your money's worth.

And agree Dody, having mucked about on the Wii I really think it is a social beast. Great with a few friends and a few drinks but can get a little bit tedious on your own.

Nintendo Wii has definitely made me consider buying a game console for the first time in...10 years? Tom, you put it in words I never could. Duck hunt was stupid fun, even mom could play. And does anyone remember the original Nintendo game with the ninja that killed baddies and swiped crystal balls from the trees? Did I just dream that game?

That describes half the games out there! Could have been Ninja Gaiden? or Wizards & Warriors (if it was more armour and giant spiders).

and i've just found out you can get Mortal Kombat for the Xbox. The gutteral demand to "finish him" will soon be emerging from my lounge room at 3 minute intervals...
