Voting error won London the Olympics..
Excerpts:
''Alex Gilady, an Israeli IOC member and part of the London 2012 Co-ordination Commission, tells the programme that another IOC member, thought to be Lambis Nikolaou of Greece, made the mistake.''
"If he had voted for Madrid it would have been 32-32 and we would have to have a vote-off between Madrid and Paris.
"In the vote-off, all the votes supporting London would have gone to Madrid because the fear was that Paris had a big chance to win. Madrid would have won against Paris, coming to the final against London."

Iran wins big in Iraq's elections
With the likely emergence of a solid Shi'ite block in the new Iraqi parliament, and the defeat of the "secular" candidates with links to the US, Iran has every reason to be pleased. The surveillance, disclosed in Friday's New York Times, is said to allow the agency to monitor international calls and e-mail messages of people inside the United States.

President Reagan's famous words "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" in reference to the Berlin wall inspired millions of people living under communism to demand, and eventually secure, freedom. Those simple words changed the world forever.
In today's world, America desperately needs a wall to protect our nation from global terrorism and illegal immigration from third-world Mexico. Thus, we say to President George Bush:

Protect an Acre, invest in the future

"Tropical rainforests are critical to the ecological well-being of the entire planet. Our best natural defense against global warming, they absorb massive amounts of CO2, while generating over 20% of the oxygen we breathe. As we saturate our atmosphere with "greenhouse gases" from the burning of oil, gas, coal and forest timber, protecting the Amazon (by far the largest rainforest in the world) is more urgent than ever.
Working in association with environmentally-concerned leaders of Brazilian state governments and NGO's, including Amazonas Verde, RainTrust will reinvest proceeds from our Protect an Acre program into the expansion of additional rainforest Reserves and the development of socially-responsible rainforest enterprises."
For $100 invested in this initiative, you will recieve your unique GPS coordinates, an Aerial Grid Photograph, and a Rain Trustee Certificate of Participation to proudly hang on your wall. The acre will be protected in your name forever.
Recent statistics show that land in the Amazon that is converted to cattle operations yields $60 per acre. If the timber is harvested, the land is then worth $400 per acre. However, if the renewable and sustainable resources are responsibly harvested, the land will yield $2,400 per acre.

Proceeds are reinvested into ecologically sustainable businesses in the rainforest , offering compelling ECO-nomic incentives for local rainforest people to leave their lands intact and reap the benfits for generation to come. "

Leonardo will produce environmental documentary
Leonardo DiCaprio has begun production on "11th Hour", a feature length documentary that will examine the state of the global environment, and includes visionary and practical solutions for restoring the planet's beleaguered ecosystems. The documentary will tackle an issue that DiCaprio has championed for years as it takes on a renewed urgency in the wake of recent natural disasters, and as increasing global abuse brings the future of our environment into greater question. The film will be co-directed and written by Leila Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners, co-founders of Tree Media Group. DiCaprio will produce, co-write and narrate the project. The team has previously collaborated on Global Warning and Water Planet, short films that can be seen on DiCaprio's eco-site, www.leonardodicaprio.org. "11th Hour" is being produced by Leila Conners Petersen and Brian Gerber for Tree Media Group, and Chuck Castleberry for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. "Global warming is not only the number one environmental challenge we face today, but one of the most important issues facing all of humanity,"said DiCaprio. "We all have to do our part to raise awareness about global warming and the problems we as a people face in promoting a sustainable environmental future for our planet." Adam Lewis, investor and environmentalist, came onboard very early in the financing of the film. Doyle Brunson, renowned poker player and long time environmentalist, who is also financing the film, said, "I know we'll be able to raise a lot of awareness for an issue that plagues our world and could have devastating consequences down the road if nothing is done." |

Riots are a disease of public order breakdown and we are probably seeing the immediate after effect of the beach riot yesterday. No shot was fired in above picture but it showed that an instance of police being assertive in 'owning the night' and prevent revenge attacks that will deteriorate the situation even further.
But public order is one thing and peace is another. One must ask though, is this a race riot or a culture riot? These two are different animals and can be hard to distinguish especially in a diverse multi cultural country like Australia.
Arthur just got back home in Sydney Australia two days ago and this is what he has to say
"Are there racists in Australia? Of course, and there always have been. But usually we ignore this minority. As a rule we don't publish their narrow minded half-thoughts in our national papers. Every city has its uneducated yobs who claim to be patriots. In fact such low end patriotism is much rarer in Australia then most places in the world because we don't really care. Our national identity is rarely challenged because we are an island and thus we rarely find reason to express it, save perhaps on the sporting field. It scares me to think that these ignorants have such a lacking sense of identity that they keenly rally around minority scapegoating while glorifying such meaningless and pitiful icons that they try and tag to our nation identity." Race Scuffles Riots; That'll ruin your Australian Summer
The trigger event for yesterday seems to have been this (last week)
"Police will allege that as the three lifesavers were walking from the beach to the boardwalk about 3pm four Middle Eastern youths began yelling at them in Arabic. The lifesavers said to the the youths: "What are you looking at?"
The Middle Eastern youths allegedly told the lifesavers to get off the beach and that they "owned" the beach.
The lifesavers allegedly responded by telling the youths that if they went in the surf, they would need rescuing because they could not swim." (Daily Telegraph)

If you follow links and reportings around the web, it doesn't look good. Maybe some Australian nomads care to give better explanation on what's going on.
Reports from Sydney Morning Herald.
"A crowd of at least 5000 - overwhelmingly under 25 - took over Cronulla's foreshore and beachside streets. Police were powerless as 200-odd ringleaders, many clutching bottles or cans of beer and smoking marijuana, led assaults on individuals and small groups of Lebanese Australians who risked an appearance during the six-hour protest.
The horde swirled after fleeing individuals, sometimes sweeping past police lines and horses, chasing a quarry who sought safety in restaurants, shops, toilet blocks and ambulances and police vehicles. Some were snatched by police, who stood against the swarm and repelled the most violent with capsicum spray."

December 10: International Human Rights Day !
"Fifty-seven years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights prohibited all forms of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, torture remains unacceptably common. Recent times have witnessed an especially disturbing trend of countries claiming exceptions to the prohibition on torture based on their own national security perceptions.
Let us be clear: torture can never be an instrument to fight terror, for torture is an instrument of terror.
The prohibition on torture is well established under international law. It is also unambiguous and absolute. It is binding on all States in all territories under their jurisdiction or effective control. It applies in all circumstances, in times of war as in times of peace. Nor is torture permissible when it is called something else: cruel and inhuman treatment is unacceptable and illegal, irrespective of the name we give it.
States must honour this prohibition and vigorously combat the impunity of perpetrators of torture. Those who conceive of or authorize any form of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and those who commit such acts, should not go unpunished. Nor may any State condone torture by a third party. This means that individuals must never be rendered to another State if there is any danger that doing so may subject them to torture.
The international community must speak forcefully, and with one voice, against torture in all its forms. Today, I call on all States who have not done so to ratify the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, as well as the Optional Protocol to the Torture Convention. And I urge all States to allow the United Nations? Special Rapporteur on Torture independent access to detainees within their control. Unimpeded access is an essential protection for these individuals, whose isolation makes them especially vulnerable to abuse. Together, we must give voice, and redress, to abused detainees as well as to all victims and survivors of torture.
Humanity faces grave challenges today. The threat of terror is real and immediate. Yet fear of terrorists can never justify adopting their methods. Nor can we be complacent about the broader prevalence of cruel and inhuman punishment, which in so many of our societies disproportionately affects the most vulnerable people: the imprisoned, the politically powerless and the economically deprived. Instead, we must respond to this evil wherever we find it by reaffirming humanity?s most basic values.
Today, on Human Rights Day, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and let us rededicate ourselves to wiping the scourge of torture from the face of the earth."

A view from the West on Egypt recent election
At least in the short run, both opponents and supporters of the Brotherhood expect that the election results are probably healthy for political life. The People's Assembly has been a sleepy place, with members rarely showing up, and the secular parties with their aging leaders and ideas captured fewer than a dozen seats.
If the political process is more vibrant, more people will vote, which conversely might diminish the weight of the Brotherhood, analysts believe. Other parties might also emerge to erode the Brotherhood's appeal as the sole opposition force. " (NY Times)

Aussie Blogs Gagged...
Email Print Normal font Large font Edmund Tadros
December 7, 2005 04:00 PM
Australian blogs will never be as hard-hitting as their overseas counterparts because of our restrictive laws.
Many local bloggers are unaware that they may be liable for everything they write on their sites, not to mention all of the colourful comments made by contributors.
Our new sedition laws will make this worse.
Blogs fall under the same defamation and other laws that regulate all media organisations in the country.
While US bloggers are protected by a freedom of speech clause in the US Bill of Rights, new sedition laws passed by Australian authorities may make life even tougher for bloggers.
Local bloggers, even without the new laws, must be very careful about what they write.
"Bloggers may be liable for what's on their website as the publisher of the information," says Stephen James, a specialist in Technology Law and partner at TressCox.
"I think they need to be more cautious. There is no exception in the law for internet conversations."
There have been only a few cases involving internet bloggers, but James expects more cases involving breaches of other laws.
His golden rule for bloggers is: "Don't post any comment about any person that you wouldn't be happy to see about yourself."

A Fellow Nomad...
Very inspirational. Makes me wonder what the fuck I'm doing...
HEY AIESEC nomads
AIESEC trainees across Turkey have just created a blog at an attempt to do three main things:
- Be a resource of information about living, working, and AIESEC in Turkey for potential and future Turkey trainees.
- Be a voice for current/ex- Turkey trainees.
- Be an evaluation/measurement system for AISESEC Turkey to gauge their strengths/weaknesses, and help them improve.
So why post about this here? Well, I know this community is teaming with AIESECers and first, we need to get current/ex- Turkey trainees to post. So if you were once a trainee in the land of Turks, please go to the site, register, and post! And if you know anyone who is thinking about an AIESEC traineeship in Turkey or heads up OGX affairs in your LC, pass this site along for reading.
December 7th, 1941
Much of the Pacific fleet was rendered useless: Five of eight battleships, three destroyers, and seven other ships were sunk or severely damaged, and more than 200 aircraft were destroyed. A total of 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,200 were wounded. Japan's losses were some 30 planes, five midget submarines, and fewer than 100 men. Fortunately for the United States, all three Pacific fleet carriers were out at sea on training maneuvers.
The day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, President Roosevelt appeared before a joint session of Congress and declared, "Yesterday, December 7, 1941--a date which will live in infamy--the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." After a brief and forceful speech, he asked Congress to approve a resolution recognizing the state of war between the United States and Japan. The Senate voted for war against Japan by 82 to 0, and the House of Representatives approved the resolution by a vote of 388 to 1. The sole dissenter was Representative Jeannette Rankin of Montana, a devout pacifist who had also cast a dissenting vote against the U.S. entrance into World War I. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war against the United States, and the U.S. government responded in kind. (more)
Chuck Norris is a pussy
He may be 59, but it seems Sylvester Stallone - and his boxing alter ego Rocky Balboa - are not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
Fifteen years after the actor last played the champ, Stallone was pictured at the weekend filming Rocky VI in Las Vegas.
But although months in the gym meant he looked as bulky as ever, even heavy make-up could not hide the fact that the years have taken their toll on Stallone.
The first Rocky won three Oscars in 1977, including Best Picture. But the follow-ups were less well received, although they still helped make Stallone Hollywood's highest-paid leading man.
In the latest chapter, Rocky comes out of retirement for one last fight.
Revealing why he had reprised the role, Stallone said: 'I am drawing on a lot of my feelings that are in synch with many people's feelings about facing the last chapter of their lives and how they want it written.
'Rocky goes through the scepticism of trying to go against the tide, to go against common sense.'

""A C-130 crashed near Tehran due to technical problems in June 2003, killing seven people. In 1997, a C-130 crashed near the northwestern city of Mashhad after encountering engine trouble, killing 86 people, and in February 2000 another air force C-130 crashed on take-off and collided with an Iran Air Airbus 300, killing ten people." Drop her a note if she has inspired you to shake off the shackles of conforming for the pursuit of dreams, or if you just simply like her "t-shirt of the day" commentary.
She has been known to ass punch, beware.
AIESEC is..
....a way of extorting money from people with the promise of "changing themselves, or even the World"
....a way of getting around labour laws in developed countries by using free labour and utilising this to create unfair competition
...an excuse to breed alcoholism, unethical sexual behaviour and a way of keeping the sweatshops in business through mass purchases of cheap t-shirts
...a way of staying at random ppl's houses for free around the world even though you have never met them and will probably just empty their fridge when you get there
anyone else have any tongue-in-cheek ideas, feel free to leave them in the comments box. I am especially interested in how AIESECers in different countries see AIESEC in this humourous way....

A new member of the Red Cross / Red Cresent family...

The "Red Crystal" is the proposed solution to a long running crisis within the international Red Cross / Red Cresent community - what to do in environments where neither a cross or a cresent is an acceptable symbol?
The problem has been mainly emphasised in the West Bank and Gaza, where Israeli ambulances use a red Star of David emblem. The Israeli "Red Cross" service is not officially recognised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) because of this, as only two symbols are internationally accepted, the cross and the cresent. In protest of Israel not being recognised, the US national Red Cross organisation has witheld over $30 million of membership dues to the international organisation.
The 192 signatories of the Geneva Convention (which formalised the Red Cross) are meeting this week to vote on the new symbol.

HABITAT Jam.. it's on...
"Imagine tens of thousands of people around the world just like you connecting in real time over the internet to discuss and debate some of the most urgent and controversial issues that face a rapidly urbanizing planet. Imagine world-class thinkers leading the discussions. Imagine the results that could be achieved by this unprecedented global conversation and collaboration.
The Habitat JAM is about adding your voice into the global conversation about the future of our cities. It's about having your say on important issues that affect you. It's about building new global networks of people who wouldn't have connected before. It's about working together across the globe to agree on solutions.
As part of the preparations for the third session of the World Urban Forum, the Government of Canada in partnership with UN-HABITAT is sponsoring this 72-hour internet event. From December 1-3, 2005, the Habitat JAM will gather your input and add it to thousands of others to turn ideas into actions for the Vancouver World Urban Forum agenda and influence the Forum's content."
TGIF: The truth about Chuck Norris
But since it's Friday, I give you another, the legend of Chuck Norris.
1. Chuck Norris? tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried.
2. When Chuck Norris has sex with a man, it is not because he is gay, but because he has run out of women.
3. Macgyver can build an airplane out of gum and paper clips, but Chuck Norris can kill him and take it.
4. Chuck Norris once roundhouse kicked someone so hard that his foot broke the speed of light, went back in time, and killed Amelia Earhart while she was flying over the Pacific Ocean.
5. Chuck Norris doesn?t read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants.
6. If you ask Chuck Norris what time it is, he always says, ?Two seconds till.? After you ask, ?Two seconds to what?? he roundhouse kicks you in the face.
7. Chuck Norris only masturbates to pictures of Chuck Norris.
8. Rather than being birthed like a normal child, Chuck Norris instead decided to punch his way out of his mother?s womb. Shortly thereafter he grew a beard.
9. Chuck Norris lost his virginity before his dad did.
10. Since 1940, the year Chuck Norris was born, roundhouse kick related deaths have increased 13,000 percent.
11. Chuck Norris sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks and unparalleled martial arts ability. Shortly after the transaction was finalized, Chuck roundhouse kicked the devil in the face and took his soul back. The devil, who appreciates irony, couldn?t stay mad and admitted he should have seen it coming. They now play poker every second Wednesday of the month.
12. Filming on location for Walker: Texas Ranger, Chuck Norris brought a stillborn baby lamb back to life by giving it a prolonged beard rub. Shortly after the farm animal sprang back to life and a crowd had gathered, Chuck Norris roundhouse kicked the animal, breaking its neck, to remind the crew once more that Chuck giveth, and the good Chuck, he taketh away.
13. Chuck Norris?s girlfriend once asked him how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. He then shouted, ?HOW DARE YOU RHYME IN THE PRESENCE OF CHUCK NORRIS!? and ripped out her throat. Holding his girlfriend?s bloody throat in his hand he bellowed, ?Don?t fuck with Chuck!? Two years and five months later he realized the irony of this statement and laughed so hard that anyone within a hundred mile radius of the blast went deaf.
14. Chuck Norris does not sleep. He waits.
15. Chuck Norris built a time machine and went back in time to stop the JFK assassination. As Oswald shot, Chuck met all three bullets with his beard, deflecting them. JFK?s head exploded out of sheer amazement.
16. Chuck Norris is not hung like a horse? horses are hung like Chuck Norris
17. Chuck Norris was the fourth Wiseman. He brought baby Jesus the gift of ?beard?. Jesus wore it proudly to his dying day. The other Wisemen, jealous of Jesus? obvious gift favoritism, used their combined influence to have Chuck omitted from the Bible. Shortly after all three died of roundhouse kick related deaths.
18. To prove it isn?t that big of a deal to beat cancer. Chuck Norris smoked 15 cartons of cigarettes a day for 2 years and aquired 7 different kinds of cancer only to rid them from his body by flexing for 30 minutes. Beat that, Lance Armstrong.
19. There are no disabled people. Only people who have met Chuck Norris.
20. Chuck Norris does not have AIDS but he gives it to people anyway.
21. Chuck Norris uses ribbed condoms inside out, so he gets the pleasure.
22. There is no chin behind Chuck Norris? beard. There is only another fist.
23. Chuck Norris once lined up to kick the winning field goal of a high school football game. When the football went flat, he persuaded the referees to let him kick the field goal with a 3 month old child. Chuck roundhoused kicked the baby 60 yards through the uprights and then proceeded to bang every girl in the stadium.
24. The original theme song to the Transformers was actually ?Chuck Norris?more than meets the eye, Chuck Norris?robot in disguise,? and starred Chuck Norris as a Texas Ranger who defended the earth from drug-dealing Decepticons and could turn into a pick-up. This was far too much awesome for a single show, however, so it was divided.
25. The chief export of Chuck Norris is pain.
26. Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for his left and right legs.
27. When Chuck Norris plays Oregon Trail his family does not die from cholera or dysentery, but rather roundhouse kicks to the face. He also requires no wagon, since he carries the oxen, axels, and buffalo meat on his back. He always makes it to Oregon before you.
28. It was once believed that Chuck Norris actually lost a fight to a pirate, but that is a lie, created by Chuck Norris himself to lure more pirates to him. Pirates never were very smart.
29. Chuck Norris recently had the idea to sell his urine as a canned beverage. We know this beverage as Red Bull.
Does anyone know 29 things about Kevin Bacon? Please get in touch!

When words are not enough...
A young couple obviously very much in love were communicating with each other quite animatedly. The girl seemed to be doing most of the 'talking', while the guy, who had his arm around her, was paying rapt attention and had this knowing smile on his face. Every so often, his smile would expand into a broad grin and eventually he'd let out a quiet laugh. He would then share the joke with his friend sitting next to him causing his friend to laugh.
The amazing thing was that the girl was a deaf-mute and was 'signing' everything to her boyfriend. He'd obviously taken the trouble to learn to communicate with her. The story doesnt really have a point to it, but it's something that just made me smile at the time as were the other passengers on the train who noticed the two of them sharing that moment.
I thought we could all use it considering how much our nomadlife main page has become laden with stories of genocides, suicide bombings, executions, people going crazy on national TV & global warming.
Singapore Hangs Australian Drug Smuggler Nguyen
Nguyen is the first Australian to be executed in 12 years, after being caught at Changi Airport with 396 grams (14 ounces) of pure heroin in 2002. He claims he was working for a Sydney drug syndicate to help his twin brother Khoa, a former addict, pay A$30,000 ($22,000) in debts.
Nguyen is the latest high-profile case of a young Australian facing drug charges in Asia. Model Michelle Leslie, 24, returned to Sydney last week after serving a three-month sentence in Bali for ecstasy possession. Schapelle Corby, 28, is serving a 15-year jail sentence for smuggling 4.1 kilograms (9 pounds) of marijuana into Bali. Nine other Australians are awaiting trial in Bali on heroin trafficking charges that carry the death penalty. In Vietnam, two Australians have been sentenced to be executed for heroin trafficking. (more)
All the way around the globe, the US is about to carry out the 1,000th execution since capital punishment was reintroduced in 1976. Kenneth Boyd, a convicted killer, will be put to death by lethal injection in North Carolina for the murder of his estranged wife and her father in 1988. (more)
One Year On
"One Year On is a collaborative initiative by the local aid and development community to profile New Zealand funded response to the Asian tsunami disaster.
Over 40 agencies and community groups are involved - ranging from NZAID, the Government's international aid and development agency which is managing New Zealand's $68 million official aid-package to the region, to community groups who raised thousands of dollars through concerts, collections and sausage sizzles.
Recovery is a long-term process but our kiwi generosity is worthwhile and does make a difference."
