LP Guide China being Banned in China.

At issue is the English-language version of the China Travel Guide published by Australian-based Lonely Planet Publications, which includes a regional map that uses different colors to mark China and Taiwan to indicate they are two separate countries.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently confirmed the book has been banned.

(more here).

I wonder if this is really true...

India kinda does the same thing, although a lot less subtly...

I met an Indian diplomat in Beijing to speed up the visa process for Chinese AIESEC interns to come to India.

One Indian diplomat plainly told me that India's Ministry for External Affairs viewed all NGOs very suspiciously. They even had a blacklist of NGOs for whom they'd carry out "special diligence" before issuing a visa.

Basically, they'd take as long as necessary to issue a visa so that the applicant got discouraged and gave up.

The reason for the blacklisting: Some NGOs regarded Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (or Azad Kashmir) as a part of Pakistan and not India. This manifested itself in the way they coloured the region in their maps of the two countries.

Fortunately, the diplomat was convinced that AIESEC didn't really care about the politics of geographical boundaries...

Yeah, the LP China guide itself warns of not showing off the cover of it's book in China - there have been instances of it being confiscated for that very reason.

I thought LP was London-based - at least I know that Tony Wheeler, the founder was an alumn of London Business School ;)

Technically it is London based. The BBC recently bought it from the Wheelers.

LP China is banned in China, although you can find LP Beijing and City guides at the official foreign book store (as well as just about every other title). However, you can still find LP China in some private book stores.

This isn't really new news though...at least since the last edition was out, the book was already banned.
